ASSIGNMENT 1

PART A

Synthetic fuel is the liquid  that obtained from the coal, oil gas, biomass or natural gas. It is commonly being produced  via Fischer Tropsch conversion, polymerization and Bergius Process and the term ‘synthetic fuel’ is used to describe that fuel.

The figure is the example of indirect conversion fuel to synthetic fuel.

That conversion creates substances that are chemically the same as crude oil or processed fuels, but were synthesized through artificial means. Conventional crude oil occurs naturally in the environment, and is used to produce a variety of fuels like gasoline and diesel. Synthetic fuel feedstocks, the raw materials used to make synfuels, have to be subjected to intense chemical and physical changes to be usable as crude oil or processed fuel.

National governments and energy companies have been paying more attention to synthetic fuels in recent years, as rising oil prices and political instability in oil-producing countries have created incentives to seek out alternatives. The main benefit of synfuels is that the raw material/substance  such as natural gas, plant waste can be easily founded and widely available, so the production of synfuel may be easier. Many synfuels like diesel , gasoline also burn cleaner than conventional fuel, that’s why synthetic fuel are mostly used in automobile industry But there are also disadvantages. While they can burn cleaner, producing synthetic fuels often causes just as much, if not more, pollution than traditional gasoline. Synfuels still remain more expensive to produce than conventional fuels, mostly because more research, development and investment are necessary to make production economically viable.

*summary for advantage and disadvantage of synthetic fuel
Advantage:
1. Can be easily produced due to wide availability of raw material.
2. Burn easily than the conventional fuel.
Disadvantage:
1. Causes more adverse pollution than traditional gasoline.
2. Expensive due to high cost of development.

The development of synthetic fuel for a long period of time will give certains impact toward the society. Some of them may give positive societal impact and some of them also can give the negative impact to the society.

As we know that level of supply  of synthetic fuel has reached the equal level to the imports from OPEC countries. As the installation of  producing fuel has reached over 50 , thus it open the job opportunity in industries to the society. As well as it encourages fresh graduate to take part in  fuel researches and development field and reduce the rate of unemployment.
Other than the spark the job opportunity inOPEC community, environmental issue also are take into consideration. As plants absorb carbon dioxide to grow, the OPEC countries could cut vehicle greenhouse emissions by as much as 50 percent in the next several decades using non-food crops to create liquid fuels. It would be an easy fit for the transportation system because they could be used directly in automobile engines and are almost identical to fuels refined from crude oil. That sets them apart from currently available biofuels, such as ethanol, which have to be mixed with gas or require special engines. The usage of synthetic fuel also allow the reduction of carbon emission.

Other environmental issues directly related to the building of a synthetic fuels industry is the fact that coal burning increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Some scientists have been concerned for some time about a “greenhouse effect” on the Earth caused by excessive amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide permits sunlight to penetrate through it but prevents energy in the form of heat from radiating back into space. The global climate would get warmer if carbon dioxide builds up, and conceivably lead to a melting of the polar ice cap, flooding of the coastlines, changing of rainfall patterns and disruption of agriculture.

PART B

As we would see it, there is a fundamental distinction in the impression of society on the effect of a synthetic fuel program compared to the impact of nuclear energy. These days, innovation has contributed a noteworthy impacts on the regular daily existence of the normal resident. This innovation whether will give profit nor damage to the general public. In any case, a lot of what we utilized is to give comforts as a part of regular day to day existence has turned out to be too mechanically mind boggling or too physically substantial for the normal native to adjust with.

Hence, to conquer this issue, society are compelled to coop with innovative advancement as it critical and importantly affected building outline which concentrate on some angle which are word related security and wellbeing, shopper rights, ecological assurance, the antinuclear development, and the opportunity of data and open revelation development. In this manner, all the building configuration ought to take after every one of these viewpoints for society. Thus, from this view, we can see obviously that there will be no distinction in the discernment by society of the effect of synthetic fuel program compared with and the impact of nuclear energy.

Environmental movement of protection is the most critical viewpoint that society accentuation in Engineering design. Indeed, even there are advantages and disadvantages for them two, however in view of environmental perception, they will give all the more awful effect to the environment. Nuclear energy produces considerable natural waste including greenhouse gasses. By this, nuclear energy can't be an answer for any issue as far more atrocious, it is wellspring of numerous issues. This will gives a long haul impact to the general public and environment as society wellbeing is at hazard and contamination will destroy nature bringing about by nuclear waste. In addition, individuals are additionally will be exposed to radiation that is extremely unsafe to the human wellbeing. Then again, synthetic fuel additionally will gives bad dream effect to nature if unnecessary disaster happened, for occurrence earthquake emanated Japan will produce nuclear toxic. As the conclusion, there will be no real distinction in the impression of society on both cases as both arrangements give negative effect on the society.
